| What is the World Fathers Union? |
| Who we are, and why we exist. |
World Fathers Union came into being in 2004 as an informal working group of disenfranchised fathers united by their common desire to see equitable treatment of fathers in custody disputes become the norm rather than the exception. These men found while comparing their personal stories that bias against fathers in family courts and child welfare agencies was endemic in all First World nations, in spite of minor differences in divorce and custody statutes from one country to another. Over the course of time, they came to the realisation that change, if it were to come, would have to be generated by raising the consciousness of people and legislators the world over. Thus the name WORLD FATHERS UNION was chosen.
In early 2006, new projects and perspectives led the Union's founding fathers to approve the creation of a website and establish itself in a more visible way. The website you are now visiting is thus the public face of an idea. It is also a common link to enable fathers in all parts of the world to work together, separated by vast distances though they might be.
Fundamentally, much like all unions, World Fathers Union is quite simply the sum of its members. It is made up of anonymous fathers and supporters from all over the world, working together in our solitudes, united by our love for our children and by our desire to see them protected from the biases and prejudices of the family courts.
We do this in many ways. We help each other in our distress by sharing experiences, by listening, and by joining hands across the seas. We help others by warning them of the pitfalls and deceptions that await them at the hands of the legal system. And we help our children by helping each other stay strong for them.
We work alone together. We are separated by thousands of kilometers, and we are next-door neighbours. We are fathers in Canada and in the United States. In New Zealand and in Australia. In England and in Scotland. In Italy and in Israel. In countries in all corners of the world. We know no national boundaries because love does not, nor does the pain of a child whose father has been taken from him.
