Olympian Myriam Bedard's child-abduction trial begins

April 02, 2007, The Montréal Gazette, (CAN)---Olympic champion Myriam Bedard is to appear in court in Quebec City this morning on charges of breaching a custodial court order, after her ex-husband complained she violated a joint-custody order in late December by taking their 12-year-old daughter to the United States.

Bedard became a major news story when she was arrested Dec. 22 in Maryland and was held in a U.S. prison for two weeks before Quebec City police brought her home aboard an RCMP aircraft to face child-abduction charges. Her daughter, Maude, was transported back to Quebec to be with her father.

She and her partner, Nima Mazhari, took Maude to the U.S. in early October on a trip Mazhari described at the time as an effort to inform U.S. officials that Bedard was being harassed by Canadian officials because of her role as a whistleblower during the sponsorship scandal.
